Oxford is the fifth best place to visit in the UK, according to a holiday website.
Travellers on TripAdvisor rated the city ahead of other top destinations, including York, Stratford-upon-Avon and St Andrews.
But it was beaten to the top spots by London, Edinburgh, Bath and Cambridge.
But Lord Mayor John Goddard said: “Fifth is not good enough. I think the voters have got it wrong.
“Conde Nast travellers last year voted Oxford the best destination in England, and the second in the UK behind Edinburgh.
“And I think they got it right.”
