ONE of the country’s most spectacular road races is held for the 30th time this year and you can be part of it.

The 10km Oxford Town and Gown fun run winds through the historic heart of the city and the stunning University Parks.

This year's race, on Sunday, May 15, hopes to raise £100,000 for muscular dystrophy research with the support of thousands of runners, many in fancy dress.

Organiser Alun Mainwaring said: “We are expecting somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 runners.

“It is our 30th anniversary this year, so a big milestone for us.

“The race has developed from just one guy’s idea and 200 runners to a massive event for the people of Oxford.

“Oxford can be really proud of that, and we are hoping that this year we will raise £100,000 for muscular dystrophy research.”

Money raised goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign to fund research and provide free care and support for the 70,000 children and adults affected by the condition.

He added: “The unique thing about Town and Gown is that runners get to go round the city centre and all the roads are closed.

“It is not something that happens in most road races – the chance to pass all these incredibly historic buildings and end up in the University Parks, which are beautiful.

“It attracts elite professional runners, but also the charity makes a lot of its money from the fancy dress runners, who create a real carnival atmosphere.

“The whole course is packed all the way round with supporters, which is fantastic to see.

“It is just a great day out for all.”

Runners will get a fundraising pack and top tips for training and nutrition when they register.

  • Entry is £20, or £18 for club runners. To register visit muscular-dystrophy.org or call 020 7803 4820.
