A TOWER block was evacuated and a woman was taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a second floor flat in Northway.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the flat in Plowman Tower, in Westlands Drive, just before midnight on Saturday night.

It was not known how many people had to leave the building.

Six fire crews and several support vehicles were sent from Rewley Road, Slade, Wheatley and Kidlington.

Incident Commander John Nixon said: “At this stage a full evacuation of the tower block was taking place after the main fire alarm had sounded. Two officers entered the flat and found a female casualty in the bedroom.

“They attempted to rouse her from her sleep and then immediately brought her out and handed her over to paramedics where she was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and then taken to hospital.”

Mr Nixon said the cause of the fire was being investigated.

The woman’s condition yesterday was not believed to be life threatening, Mr Nixon.
