You report that “Ian Bayley is one of the brainiest people in Britain after notching up an impressive array of top intellectual prizes”. But I am not so sure.

Firstly, let me congratulate him on becoming Mastermind Champion 2011 and, secondly, I concede that as a computer science lecturer he is undoubtedly a clever person.

However, Mastermind-style quizzes are feats of general knowledge, not intelligence. I often do well in pub quizzes, yet struggle with basic arithmetic or practical tasks.

Let’s see more prizes for people who can solve problems rather than for reciting facts that we can all find at the touch of a button anyway these days.
