AN OXFORDSHIRE animal charity has urged people not to buy bunnies this Easter after the number of pet rabbits abandoned at its centre more than doubled.

Last spring, the Burford Blue Cross centre was caring for just 26 rabbits.

But that has jumped to 44 in the run-up to this Easter.

Animal welfare assistant Katie Stiles said: “Mums and dads should think twice before buying their child a pet rabbit this Easter.

“This spring we have seen a huge increase in unwanted bunnies being brought into our centres because people no longer want them or are unable to care for them properly.

“Owners often get the sex of their rabbits wrong and end up with an unwanted litter of little mouths to feed.

“Neutering not only prevents this happening, but it usually makes your rabbit happier and healthier as it reduces the risk of disease.”

Other possible reasons for the increase include the recession or simply children losing interest in their pets.

Ms Stiles added: “We now have the challenge of finding them all homes so if you are ready to take on the commitment of a new pet, do consider one of our rescue rabbits. But please don’t buy one just for Easter. Treat yourself or your child to an Easter egg instead.”
