A SOLDIER who lost his legs in a explosion in Afghanistan will join Oxford United fans on a charity walk to tomorrow’s game at the Kassam stadium.

Jack Cummings, a sapper with the 101 Engineer Regiment, will join the fans on the final part of the 15-mile Steventon to Oxford walk.

They will arrive at The Priory in Grenoble Road at 1pm and all cash donated will go to the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help charity.

It has been organised by 23-year-old Jamie Brown, who went to St Birinus school in Didcot with Mr Cummings, who was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on patrol in Afghanistan in August.

It comes after Mr Cummings was the guest of honour at United’s Military Day at February 26’s game against Hereford United.

Mr Brown said: “We were in the same form group.

“I hadn’t seen him since he joined the army at 16, but we met up again at the game the other month.

“I’d obviously heard what had happened to him. His sister had kept us all updated on how he was over Facebook.”

He said he was inspired to help the forces and asked Mr Cummings which charity he wanted to help.

SSAFA helped the 22-year-old following the blast, which also left him with serious injuries to his left hand.

Mr Brown said: “It was so good to see Jack looking well.

He has always got a smile on his face.

“We just want to raise as much as we can for a charity that helps people who have been hurt serving for their country, and their families.”

The walk starts from Steventon Sports and Social Club at 8am to arrive at the stadium at 1pm for the game against Chesterfield.

Mr Brown’s employer, Jobs@Pertemps, will also match the cash raised, up to £500. Mr Cummings is currently at the Headley Court Military Hospital in Surrey.

Girlfriend Sarah Hoare said she and Jack were really looking forward to taking part in the walk “with the help of a little push here and there”. She added: “It will be great to do it for SSAFA as they have really helped by providing accommodation and welfare support through the past six months.”
