Sir – A footnote to Chris Koenig’s engaging article (Romantic Decay is over for Osney Mill, April 14) on Osney Mill and the once mighty Osney Abbey.
The Augustinian Priory of that name was indeed founded by Robert D’Oilly in 1129, in this case Robert D’Oilly the younger, nephew of Robert D’Oilley (d. 1091), the first Norman governor of Oxford and begetter, amongst other things, of Oxford Castle.
The D’Oilley family owned estates in various parts of Oxfordshire (and beyond) and the two Roberts were significant builders and makers, both of Oxford and of its county.
