ABOVE and beyond our council taxes, Oxford City Council is now asking us to pay £35 for a brown wheelie bin which will be, after May 3, the only straightforward way we will be able to dispose of garden waste.
This is a stealth green tax, deeply hostile to environmental concerns and an invitation to fly-tip.
Clearly, it is a try-on. If the council get away with this, what is to stop them charging us twice for other services, then privatising them piecemeal and dragging us back to the 1880s, before there were any public services at all?
This differs not at all from rogue and ill-judged cuts of the ConDems. It is a measure that deserves to be stopped in its tracks.
