OXFORD’S much loved outdoor swimming pool will open for the summer season at the end of this month.

Gates opening at Hinksey Pool, like the return of cricket to the parks, heralds the start of summer in the city.

And this year families can celebrate at the lido, off Abingdon Road, with free entry for a special fun day on Saturday, April 30, when the pool will open at 9am.

The city council pool will be open until September.

Councillor Mark Lygo said: “You know summer is only round the corner when Hinksey Pool opens.”

The executive member for sport, play and schools liaison added: “The pool is a great attraction for local families, students and visitors.”

During the opening day the Oxford BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) will be offering free snorkelling and diving sessions.

If the April sunshine continues, visitors will be able to relax on the pool’s sun loungers after cooling off in the pool. The catering hut will be open serving snacks.

A swim will cost adults £5.30, a concession is £3.40 and a family ticket is £15.50.

Regular visitors can buy a Hinksey Season Slice card, valid throughout the summer season, and there is a 10 per cent discount for cards bought in April.

The cards are available at Barton Leisure Centre, Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, Blackbird Leys Pool, Ferry Leisure Centre, Oxford Ice Rink and Temple Cowley Pools & Fitness Centre and will also be available from the Hinksey Outdoor Pool reception area on Thursday, April 28.

Hinksey Outdoor Pool is offering free swimming to all under-17s during specified sessions.
