SIX months of work started on Oxford’s Heyford Hill roundabout yesterday, with drivers experiencing some delays during the day.

Rush hour commuters escaped the worst of the problems, with no lane closures in force until 9.30am.

But taxi driver Ghafoor Khan said it was “absolute chaos” by 10.30am as work started on turning the roundabout into a ‘hamburger’ to ease traffic problems.

He said: “It took me 45 minutes to get from the city centre out to Unipart. It was completely shambolic.”

By mid-afternoon, bus company Thames Travel said its X39 and X40 buses were delayed by between 10 and 15 minutes.

Work continues at the junction between the eastern and southern bypasses until October and drivers face 30mph speed limits on all roads leading to the roundabout.

The project is being funded by Sainsbury’s.
