OXFORD’S pensioners have been treated to a tea party to remember.

About 300 OAPs packed the Oxford Annual Pensioner’s Tea Party at Oxford Town Hall in St Aldate’s yesterday.

Senior citizens were served a free meal of ham, salad and jacket potato, followed by fruit cake and ice cream – and plenty of tea and coffee.

Funded by money raised fortnightly at tea dances in the Town Hall, the party has been held each year since 1936 and is an Oxford institution.

Organiser Mo Tweney said: “The event means a lot to them. Some of them don’t get out and about.”

The event also featureda raffle and music by an organist.

Nadine Stone, 72, from Oxford, said: “The event is really very nice. We don’t get a lot for free nowadays.”

Shirley Allmond, 75, also from the city, said: “You meet people you maybe don’t see all year. It is very good.”

The event was traditionally held in January but has now been moved to April to allow the pensioners to go home while it is still light.
