THE Bishop of Oxford saw first hand the debt problems being faced by Rose Hill residents on a visit to an estate advice centre.

The Rt Rev John Pritchard spent more than an hour at the Rose Hill and Donnington Advice Centre, meeting staff, volunteers and trustees.

The centre was formed in 1989 and offers a drop-in sessions throughout the week.

Patrick Lawrence, chairman of the board of trustees, said: “He was very interested in the problems people have with debt, evictions and so on.

“There is a lot of hardship around at the moment.”

The centre deals with about 1,500 people every year, on issues including debt, benefits and eviction.

Bishop John, pictured with welfare rights adviser Carole Roberts, said: “I think the advice centre is a tremendous operation and I was really impressed with the team. Obviously they had a deep knowledge of the life and times of the estate and are very aware of the problems people face with debt and money management.”

He added: “This is just the sort of organisation that needs to be supported.”
