A SPEAKER system is not something you would expect in a play area, but the hi-tech feature is part of a new recreation ground in Carterton.

The seating area at the Alvescot Road play area features speakers which teen-agers can wirelessly link to their iPod music players, allowing them to play their own sounds.

The system does not work at night.

Carterton’s mayor Norman MacRae used the ceremony to have a go on the new equipment. The play area includes climbing frames, swings and a zip-wire.

Mr MacRae said: “It was lovely to be young at heart again.

“The whole thing, everything, is fantastic, and I’m very happy to report there have been queues for all the equipment. This will give youngsters something to do and help them keep fit.

“There’s something for everyone – it’s first class.”

The project started a year ago, but it almost fell through after funding problems at Oxfordshire County Council.

But in October last year the £200,000 project – which will also include new pathways and a new performing area – was given the go-ahead. The finishing touches will be completed in June.

Carterton Town Council, West Oxfordshire District Council and other grant-giving bodies also gave money.

Carterton Youth Council members helped with the design of the play area.
