ARTISTS have installed a sculpture to help hops grow on an Oxford estate.

Tiffany Black, left, and Leora Brook, second left, pictured with Catherine Gibb and Terry Kirkby, unveiled the 20ft-high frame at Rose Hill Allotments, in Lenthall Road, yesterday.

The metal sculpture’s shape has been based on the Modern Art Oxford gallery in Pembroke Street.

Since September the gallery has been growing hops on the site, which have been turned into a limited edition beer – called Plot 16 – by the Shotover Brewing Company in Horspath.

Now the artists hope the hops plants will grow around the frame and provide a bumper crop this year.

The scheme is part of Modern Art Oxford’s Art in Rose Hill scheme, which launched in 2007 and is due to finish later this year.

Ms Black said: “The plants will climb over the 25ft-high, 30ft-long, temporary metal sculpture.

“As the months progress, definitions, edges and borders will become confused, destabilised by the unpredictable energy of plant growth.”
