COWLEY-built Minis destined for Japan are being stockpiled as a result of the ongoing crisis following the earthquake and tsunami.

Bosses said last night they are holding cars that have already been produced for Japanese customers and will not be building any more that have been pre-ordered in the continuing wake of the crisis.

Plant spokesman Rebecca Baxter said: “Any cars destined for Japanese customers that have already been produced or are coming through the production process will be held in stock until further notice.

“Orders for vehicles that have not yet been produced will be held back until the situation is clearer.”

Ms Baxter declined to give details of how many cars are being held in stock for Japan or where they are located.

But last year a total of 11,338 cars were sold in Japan with the majority of those produced in the Cowley plant.
