MOTOR Mouth Kevin Dyer (Oxford Mail, February 18) should have gone further with his criticism of builders’ vans and lorries.

All commercial vehicles over the size of a family car should be mechanically restricted to 50mph maximum speed.

This is the only way to stop the daily chaos on our roads caused by heavy vehicle crashes due entirely to their speed and inability to slow down quickly enough to avoid killing people.

David Cameron and co would not need to make cutbacks anywhere if every vehicle travelling over the speed limit on the Botley interchange was photographed and fined as a result. The revenue collected over a year would pay off the national debt.

Regardless of the above, it is time for all commercial drivers to be tested every year for driving ability and general health checks.

There are still too many taxi drivers out there willing to go through red traffic lights with impunity and far too many older people driving school buses who are allowed to smoke, thus putting children at great risk of their driver having a heart attack at the wheel.
