IRWIN Paul Foote, known as Paul, a fellow of The Queen’s College and Russian translator, has died aged 84.

He was educated at Swanage Grammar School before being enlisted into the Royal Artillery in 1944.

During his time in the Army, he was taught Russian and spent time in Potsdam, Germany.

In 1949, Mr Foote came to study Russian and German at Oxford University, getting a double first from St Edmund Hall. He was appointed to a lectureship in 1954 and elected Fellow and Praelector in Russian at Queen’s in 1964.

Mr Foote was a widely published translator of Russian literature, notably of Lermentov, Saltykov-Shchedrin and Tolstoy. He was also an expert on censorship in 19th-century Russia, and worked with scholars in St Petersburg.

A keen rower, he was in the crew that won the first Teddy Hall race in 1952, and was a keen member of the RNLI.

He leaves three children, Stephen, Gillian and Susan, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral is today at 2.15pm at the Oxford Crematorium.
