Sir – Following earlier discussions in your pages of our street’s innovative approach to traffic-calming measures, I write to inform you that Oxfordshire County Council has released the results of a two-week survey of traffic speeds in Beech Croft Road.

Compared with other streets across Oxford where the 20mph restriction has been imposed and speeds have fallen by less than 1mph on average, in our street average speeds have fallen by more than 5mph (24 per cent) to 16mph in both directions, while the volume of traffic has grown by three per cent. Typical speeds in our street are now 11-16mph, and less than a tenth of cars now exceed 21mph.

Five years ago, when the last survey was done, the average and typical speeds down our street exceeded 21mph.

The fall in average speeds is more than 99.9 per cent statistically significant, and the fall in faster speeds is even more pleasing, so we think our community’s measures — with the support of both local councils — are starting to work.
