YOUNGSTERS have been helping OAPs learn computer skills.

Volunteers aged 12 to 18 are working with 33 pensioners on an Age UK Oxfordshire computer course at Carterton Community College.

Rosie Herridge, 12, of Carterton, said her favourite moment was showing one OAP how to put their drawings onto the computer and turn them into cards.

She said: “The way they looked at it and said ‘this is amazing’ and made me feel very pleased.”

Jess Swift, 16, of Deer Park, Witney, said: “I didn’t think it would be too hard teaching people something I know and use all the time.”

Black Bourton resident Joan Leach, 71 said she “hadn’t got a clue” about computers and was “frightened” by the internet when she first joined the course.

But she said she could now surf the web and send and receive emails.

She said: “I’m thoroughly enjoying the course and it’s wonderful that young people are helping. There aren’t many youngsters that would take their time to help older people, not these days. hey would sooner be with their own age group.”
