John Powell travelled to Ghana in 1971 to lecture in mechanical engineering. Now retired and living in Witney, his novel The Colonial Gentleman’s Son (Book Guild, £17.99) tells the story of Kwame Mainu, born in Ghana in 1957, just four days before independence. Kwame succeeds academically, but is faced with a dilemma when offered the chance to earn large sums of money carrying anonymous parcels abroad.
