Sir – It seems that councillor Keith Mitchell, when writing to the people he is supposed to be serving, cannot help himself and feels that he simply must insult their intelligence.

In his latest letter to The Oxford Times, (I do not want to see county libraries closed, Letters, February 24) he claims that it is “simply not true” that 20 libraries are earmarked for closure.

Why, then, does he suggest the exact opposite in his emails to me? I had asked him whether he could guarantee that Cowley library would not be closed. In his very polite reply, he says: “If you check the list, Cowley library is in the 23 to continue to receive funding . . . It is a good idea to do your homework . . . If not cuts to libraries — where? Answer the question.”

If “the 23 libraries” are to continue to receive funding, then as night follows day it is clear that according to councillor Mitchell the other libraries will not. And without funding, they will close. What is “simply not true” here? All of Mr Mitchell’s increasingly ridiculous blustering cannot hide the fact that he has painted himself into a corner, not helped by his disgraceful personal attacks on people who disagree with him — including this latest baseless accusation that The Oxford Times is printing things that are “simply not true”: they are true enough, and we all know this.
