A BAKERY worker last night told how she saw a man slumped outside a chip shop in Blackbird Leys after he was stabbed in the stomach.

A 50-year-old man was attacked at the back of Top Shops in Blackbird Leys Road at about noon yesterday, but his injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Paramedics took him to Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.

Police said he had been robbed and his attacker had stolen his wallet.

Last night local residents and shop workers said they were shocked by the news, as the road had been relatively crime free since Oxford City Council in-stalled CCTV cameras in Blackbird Leys Road in 2009.

An employee at Nash’s Bakery said she saw the victim minutes after the attack when she went to post a letter during her lunch break.

She said: “I just saw him on the street. He had a hole in him outside the chip shop. He had blood on him, it was all over his shirt.

“It must have happened so quickly.

“I do not know who it was. He was just leaning against the wall. He was really quiet, I thought he would be screaming. The police were there. I think they were waiting for the paramedics.”

A 45-year-old woman said she also saw the man after the attack and said he was clutching his stomach.

She said: “He looked really pale and he was holding his stomach. There was a lot of blood. The police were there so I left them to it. I didn’t recognise him.”

Malcolm James, a supervisor at McColl’s news-agents, said the attack happened at the back door of his shop.

He said: “We didn’t see anything, all I heard was it was a man in a suit and he had been robbed.

“I think he had been at the shops and was going back round to his car at the back.

“Maybe he took money out or something and someone was watching him.

“It does make me feel a bit unsafe, especially as it’s so close to home.”

A staff member at takeaway Branos said: “Nothing has happened like this for a long time, not for six or seven months.

“Everything was nice and quiet, but this will make people scared again.”

Dc Lisa Heaton was unable to provide a description of the suspect as she had not read the victim’s statement before we went to press.

Police spokesman Christopher Kearney said the man had two wounds and a “pronged instrument” had been used to stab him once on the lower abdomen.
