CHILDREN dusted off their dancing shoes for a giant world record attempt yesterday.

Children and staff at the John Radcliffe Nursery, pictured, in Oxford, joined others around the country in a bid to beat the record for the most people performing children’s song Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

The event was part of the ‘I Can Chatterbox Challenge’ organised by Co-operative Childcare, which aims to raise money for UK children with speech and communication problems.

This is the 10th year a challenge has been organised to raise awareness of the issue.

Jan Thorp, nursery manager at the John Radcliffe Nursery, said: “All the children were so excited to take part in a world record attempt. They dressed up especially for it and had a great time singing and dancing with one another.

“Everyone at the nursery believes it’s really important to encourage children from a young age to feel confident in expressing themselves, and the world record attempt helped the children to form friendships and learn how to interact socially, a crucial part of their development.

“It was a joy to take part in such a fun activity and to help raise awareness of the communication problems that young children face.”

More than 100,000 people were estimated to have taken part in the attempt, which was last night awaiting verification by the Guinness Book of Records.
