WE return today to our scrutiny of the appalling betrayal of our primary school children in Oxford to reveal how Tower Hamlets schools are outperforming this city’s.

The London borough is one of the most deprived areas in the country, yet its seven-year-olds are getting better results than in Oxford.

Oxfordshire County Council says that Tower Hamlets gets more resources pumped into its facilities than we do. But that cannot be the sole reason.

We believe there are multiple factors behind our children’s lack of attainment that must all be addressed.

Michael Waine, the councillor responsible for school improvement, says it is wrong to compare Oxford to Tower Hamlets because of this cash factor. We disagree.

It would be wrong to judge the council on these factors alone. It is not incorrect, however, to look at and understand the improvements in Tower Hamlets and raise with the Government if this inequality in funding is one of the main factors.

A child in Oxford and a child in Tower Hamlets should have the same opportunities in their education to achieve what they can.

Whether that is the result of more money, better leadership and teaching, and/or greater involvement from parents is the question our education officials must understand and then tackle.
