I'M a motorist and a cyclist and I can’t understand why people keep asking for cyclists to pay road tax.

If cyclists were included in the road fund system, then, based on their emissions, they would be exempt from paying anything just like many cars are.

Yet you never hear these people complain about all the cars that pay nothing but contribute to the damage and congestion of the roads.

As a motorist, I pay £180 a year for my tax but I don’t get annoyed with cyclists paying nothing. I get annoyed with the Government raking in about £47 billion a year in road fund duty but only putting about £18-19 billion into the road system.

As a cyclist I did find James Styring’s comments in his On Yer Bike column (Oxford Mail, February 16) unhelpful and ridiculous.
