I generally ignore Tony Augarde’s frequent letters, but his suggestion (Oxford Mail, February 17) that councillors should make themselves redundant struck me as curiously illogical and needing a reply.
The electorate has the opportunity to make as many sitting councillors redundant as it wishes at election time.
For the county council, the next election date is May 2, 2013. I rather sense Mr Augarde believes local services should be run by someone other than elected members. If so, by whom, Mr Augarde? By Whitehall civil servants? By Westminster MPs? By unaccountable bureaucrats who are not subject to the ballot box? Come on Mr Augarde, what did you mean by your throw away line?
