HYUNDAI’S ix20 is the ultimate Goldilocks car. Not too big and not too small, it could prove just right for the lifestyles of many motorists.

Despite its compact dimensions, it is the clever use of space inside which guarantees the car will be a success.

The ix20’s practical interior and driving dynamics are certain to tempt buyers wanting to downsize from larger cars, as well as those with growing families who need more practicality.

Under the skin, it is the unusually long wheelbase that opens up the possibilities to create a spacious cabin for five, with lots of legroom and headroom, and also deliver a surprisingly capacious boot.

But the striking difference from most superminis is the high driving position, which gives a commanding view of the road that rivals some compact 4x4s.

Externally, the stylish German-designed, Czech-built ix20 is thoroughly modern, with an eye-catching, asymmetric pattern front grille, reflected inside on the speaker grilles and seat fabric With prices starting at about £11,500, Hyundai said the line-up was designed to appeal to a broad range of customers, with three equipment levels and three different engines.

Every manual model in the ix20 range is fitted with Intelligent Stop and Go technology and low rolling-resistance Continental tyres, to cut emissions and fuel consumption.

Conscious of the particular demands of Britain’s country roads, Hyundai did extensive fine-tuning of the chassis here to improve refinement and dynamics.

As well as being a comfortable car, Hyundai has upped the focus on safety, with all models coming with Electronic Stability Program, side and curtain airbags, active head restraints and Hillstart Assist Control, which prevents the car rolling back when starting on an incline.

Also standard are a height-adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, six airbags, active head restraints, and a six-speaker radio/CD audio system with iPod connection.

Move up to the mid-range Active trim test model and the car comes with 16in alloy wheels, body-coloured door handles and mirrors, which are electrically-adjustable and heated, and reversing sensors.

The steering wheel, which is tilt and telescopic adjustable for height and reach, is adorned with a set of remote-control switches to allow you to control the hi-fi system – and, in the case of the test model, your mobile phone — without having to take your eyes off the road.

Instrumentation and dashboard layout is crisp and clean, with chrome-rimmed dials, backlit in blue, housing clear, white figures and red needles and a digital display complete with gearshift indicator.

Any lingering concerns that the ix20 might not be just right, should be assuaged by Hyundai’s care package, which includes a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty; five years of roadside assistance; and five years of free vehicle health checks.
