SUPERLOOS will close, garden waste charges will rise and car park repairs will be scaled back under cost-cutting plans agreed by the Vale of White Horse District Council.

Last night, the Liberal Democrat-run council agreed £710,450 of savings after its Government grant was cut by £1m to £6.6m.

One 20p-a-time superloo in Wantage and two in Abingdon will close to save £40,000.

The pest control service will close to save £24,760. Residents will be diverted to private firms, who will charge the same fee.

An increase in garden waste charges will net £28,000, while charges for planning application advice will be introduced. Prices were not available last night.

Yet plans to close crazy golf, pitch-and-putt and tennis facilities in Abingdon, and 25 recycling sites, were shelved.

And Vale’s share of the council tax bill will be frozen and the community grants pot will increase by £20,000 to £103,000.

The council said frontline cuts amounted to £116,600.

Richard Webber, executive member for finance, said: “This is not just a reassuringly competent budget. In the circumstances in which local government finds itself all over the country it is, by any measure, a fantastic achievement.”

All Conservatives opposed the budget at the meeting at Abingdon’s Guildhall.
