CHILDREN left the classroom to come face-to-face with some real creepy crawlies.

Pupils from Windale Primary School, in Blackbird Leys, donned wellies for the day out at Sutton Courtenay’s Environmental Education Centre.

The children met owls, held baby bats and fished around in the pond for newts.

Outdoor learning leader Callum Drury said: “Making the bird boxes had the best reaction, the children don’t often get the opportunity to do design and technology.

“They got the chance to put something together themselves. They all really took to it and drew their own designs and pictures.”

Mr Drury said many of the children did not have the chance to get up close to wildlife living on the Oxford estate.

He added: “They were awe-struck by the Indian eagle owl and with the bats – discussions ranged from Batman to the world’s biggest bat.”
