HAWAIIAN dancing, yoga and boxing classes are being planned to help people get fit.

A series of free taster sessions is being organised on Oxford’s Barton estate to encourage residents to get more active.

The first Live Well day takes place at Barton Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday, and will showcase a range of physical activities.

There will also be stalls offering information and advice on how to lead a health life.

The event has been set up by Barton Community Association with the help of the Get Oxfordshire Active project, known as Go Active.

Drop-in street sports sessions, seated exercise classes and a health-walk around Barton are also being organised.

Project spokesman Vicki Galvin said: “We are very excited about the event and are hoping for a good turn out on the day.

“We would like to make it an annual event or replicate it in other areas.

“We want to let people know of all the opportunities they have in their communities and on their doorsteps.

“There has been a fantastic response so far from the public and those involved in the plans.

“Everyone helping us to set it up has said what a good idea they think it is, and how they are very much looking forward to being a part of it.”

Oxford city councillor Mark Lygo, board member for Sport, Play and School Liaison, said: “This will be a great day for the community of Barton to come along and get advice and information on healthy living.”

As well as the strenuous activities available, there will be massage and healthy food workshops, with home-made snacks available.

Barton householder Sue Holden said: “It’s fantastic that all this information will be provided to the residents of Barton. It will show them what there is on offer on their doorsteps.”

The day will run from 10am-2pm. There is no need to book for classes, although space is limited for some taster sessions.
