Sir – Keith Mitchell’s ill-considered letter to your paper, (February 17), will have won him no supporters.

I refer particularly to the paragraph where he takes Dr Diana Sanders to task for her support for the library service: ‘I am only sorry that your love of library buildings, collections, reference books and maps does not extend to the human beings . . . who will have to endure extra cuts if we were to exempt libraries.’ How dare he imply that Dr Sanders has no thought for vulnerable people? Every good cause has its champions and an individual’s support for one particular cause does not permit the inference that she is indifferent to others.

It is Mr Mitchell who tells us that we have a choice between libraries or social services; others might manage the budget differently.
