DRIVERS may have been surprised to get a Valentine’s-shaped treat while stopped at traffic lights this week.

Hearts appeared over the red lights at the St Clement’s Junction at the bottom of Headington Hill, Oxford on St Valentine’s Day.

The stunt was the work of the self-styled Tea and Biscuits art group, to mark the romantic occasion – and give motorists a smile.

Group member Tom, who did not want to reveal his surname, said: “We put the heart stencils up over the lights at 4am on St Valentine’s Day. Like everyone else, we have been inspired by modern artists like Banksy and we wanted to do something ourselves, but without damaging property.”

Tom, a student in Oxford, and his accomplices Gus and a friend also called Tom, He said: “It’s been fantastic, people have taken photos and have laughed and pointed. It got a real reaction.”

Tom promised more art would follow in the city soon, potentially with a St Patrick’s Day theme. The hearts were still in place yesterday.
