Case Study

HYDAC Technology Limited is a global supplier of fluid technology, hydraulic and electronic equipment. With more than 5,000 employees worldwide, 40 overseas companies and over 500 sales and service partners it is close to its customers helping to provide engineering advice for production, installation and service.

Supplying to industries such as power generation, steel manufacture, off-shore technology, mobile machinery, paper mills and wind turbines to name only a few, HYDAC has a vast array of products and expertise suited to most types of industry.

HYDAC has operated, very successfully, its Apprenticeship programme for many years.

Engineering manager Steffan Grieve commented: “I started as an apprentice here 14 years ago and now in a management role I enjoy helping new apprentices to find their niche. We have had some real Apprenticeship success stories here.

“Tobias Daley, for example, came to us as a 16-year-old apprentice and has gone from being an Engineering Technician, to a Fluid Service Engineer and is now managing the department as Fluid Service Manager.

“This is a demanding role and one that requires a lot of product knowledge and understanding of customer applications. This department has been growing impressively since his appointment.

“David Quigley is another real success story. He started out with the company as an Apprentice Fitter. Having completing his City and Guilds, he went on to study for his ONC and HNC. After serving for many years as Chief Design Engineer David is now the Production Manager for HYDAC.”

HYDAC currently employs four advanced apprentices. Daniel Bryan and Sam Crofts who are in their fourth and final year as well as Thomas Stokes and Jack Foxcroft who started their training towards the end of last year.

“Daniel and Sam have been studying and working very hard and are already in the design office helping with the ongoing project work. They are both well on the way to becoming Design and Development Engineers,” says Steffan.

When asked what the highlights of his training have been Daniel said: “The sense of achievement and recognition throughout the Apprenticeship is great. I have achieved basic skills training (PEO), a BTEC National Certificate and will complete a Foundation Degree in June.”

Isis Training Services is proud to support HYDAC and other employers to manage their Apprenticeship programmes, all of whom share a similar vision to Steffan Grieve.

He said: “HYDAC has benefited greatly from the Advanced Apprenticeship programme and continues to invest in the young people of today.

“This commitment is helping to build on the knowledge base and expertise that has grown within our company over the years.”
