MUSLIMS and human rights supporters turned out in force in Oxford last night to show solidarity for Egypt’s democracy campaigners.
Carrying placards bearing the words ‘Democracy for Egypt’ and ‘Muslims behind Egypt’, more than 100 people met at Carfax tower, in the city centre, to light a candle and hold a vigil in support.
Anti-government protests have been intensifying across Egypt over the past few weeks, as police and the army clash with demonstrators demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak.
The vigil was organised by the Oxford Islamic Information Centre (OIIC).
Dr Hojjat Ramzy, chairman of Oxford’s Iqra School in Littlemore, helped organise the rally. He said: “What we are doing is showing we stand in solidarity with the people of Egypt and we support them in their call for the resignation of Mubarak.
“As we have democracy in this country, so too should they.
“We want to show the people of Egypt that we support them.”
