Sir – Last week Christopher Gray wrote that “For some reason, Oxfordshire seems not to have required a Carnegie Library . . . The closest Carnegie gift, I think, was in Stratford-upon-Avon . . .” It’s a pity that Mr Gray did not consult back numbers of the very newspaper for which he writes.
Had he done so he would have discovered that on November 28, 1924, The Oxford Times reported that “Through the beneficence of the late Mr Carnegie, the Oxfordshire County Council were enabled to establish a free library in Eynsham some three months ago.”
