AN MEP says it is “ludicrous” that council chiefs are pushing ahead with a £19.5m link road plan for Witney while cutting libraries and youth services cash.

Green MEP Keith Taylor said Oxfordshire County Council should use the Cogges Link Road money to keep open threatened youth centres and libraries.

The South East MEP said: “It’s ludicrous at a time when the council are proposing such large cuts to public services.”

The council has proposed cutting funding to 20 out of 43 libraries and 21 youth centres to save £6.2m.

The link road aims to cut congestion and pollution in Bridge Street by creating another route over the River Windrush.

It would run from the junction of Oxford Hill and Jubilee Way, around the Cogges estate to the Station Lane roundabout.

Ian Hudspeth, the county council cabinet member for growth and infrastructure, said: “Obviously individuals have their own opinions, which I respect, but the clear aspiration of the town, district and county councils for many years has been to deliver the CLR to relieve congestion in Witney.”
