POWER cuts are killing business and driving customers away from a Wantage shopping centre, according to traders.

Five blackouts have hit all 10 shops at Grovelands Shopping Centre, Savile Way, in the last month, the latest on Tuesday.

Karann Rowland, owner of La Belle Vie hairdressers, said: “We had six power cuts since December 11. It can take five minutes for the engineer to come out or five hours.

“I’m losing a lot of money every time this happens. Every Friday I’m down about £700.”

The centre was also hit on December 11, January 11, January 21 and January 28.

Southern Electric spokesman Duncan MacDonald said: “We are aware of the series of interruptions experienced by customers in the area.

“We are using the latest technology at our disposal to establish where this fault is and carry out a repair. We apologise to the customers in the area.”
