STOP the supermarket juggernaut.

The main supermarkets appear to be trying to eliminate local shops in a bid to gain an overwhelming slice of the market. This has been very successful so far in Oxford due to their large financial resources.

A current case is Tesco’s aggressive campaign for the site of the former Friar public house in Marston, in spite of community opposition.

The last and final appeal was defeated by 10 votes to zero by objectors and Oxford City Council.

Objections included concerns over the road junction; lack of demand for a Tesco Express; the quality of the building which would be demolished; the number of mature trees which would be butchered; plans for a forecourt over a right of way, which could result in accidents to pedestrians; and the current cramped parking situation in the area, which would be exacerbated.

Despite that, Tesco has forced a public inquiry to be held on March 29 at Oxford Town Hall, at 10am.

It will cost thousands by all objectors to defend democracy, and Tesco are relying on their vast resources.

Tesco’s arrival could result in the closure of one of the local stores opposite, in which case no jobs would be gained against the forced redundancies which would be expected.

What can we all do about this effective colonisation of our cities? Well you can visit tescopoly.org and voice your views, contact your local MP and attend the public inquiry to officially object.
