Colin Morris’s claim that Bicester’s new Rail junction will be “unbearably” noisy (Oxford Mail letters, January 11) is false.

Evergreen 3 will bring half-hourly London trains to Bicester Town station: within walking distance of thousands of south Bicester residents. Bicester Town is closer than Bicester North to the Bicester ring road.

Tens of thousands of Bicester Village shoppers coming by rail would prefer a 300 metre walk from Bicester Town to a shuttle bus from Bicester North. Bicester will prosper.

More routes, starting points and connections will suit more travellers between London and Oxford. Water Eaton, meanwhile, will attract 30,000 Kidlington and North Oxford people who have no bus to Oxford station. Oxford to Marylebone trains will also attract even more people away from car use.

Paddington trains, Espress coaches and Oxford Tubes have never bankrupted each other. Chiltern’s 100mph diesels and FGW’s 100mph electrics will be well matched.

The Chiltern route will be only slightly longer. Passengers will choose whichever fares, connections or on-train comforts best suit them. Both railways will thrive.

Being able to divert FGW trains via Bicester instead of Banbury will always be helpful.

Once works are completed to enlarge Reading station by 2016 and electrify Paddington to Oxford services, work may start on HS2’s Old Oak Common interchange.

Railways, like water mains or any other network, always need alternative routes. Chiltern promises more noise reduction and insulation than the law requires.

Mr Morris has not opposed Evergreen 3 via the public inquiry because he has no grounds to do so.
