Veteran TV motormouth Murray Walker is revving up for a new career - as a stage star.

The former commentator, known for many years as the voice of Formula One, will feature in a new theatrical production of hit kids TV show Roary The Racing Car.

Walker, 87, will be heard providing the commentary for the race during Roary's Champion Of Champions show which begins a theatre tour next month.

The TV legend, who retired from F1 in 2001, has featured in the Channel 5 show occasionally with his breathless trackside performances.

He plays himself in an animated section of the live action show during a race at the Silver Hatch track.

The show also features the voice of Peter Kay, who plays Big Chris in the show, while the production will be narrated by Sir Stirling Moss.

Champion of Champions will visit 90 venues over the coming months.

Executive producer Greg Lynn said: "Walker's excitable commentary style was deemed perfect for the fast-paced adventures set at Silver Hatch race track.

"In true Murray format, the stage show is peppered with Murrayisms, and at 87 years, he's definitely still got it."

Walker said: "This is the first time that I will appear on stage, albeit in animation form - I now feel that I have achieved fame at last."
