CHINESE Students put on a show at Oxford Town Hall to celebrate their New Year.

The event, on Friday, showcased 15 traditional acts including martial arts, comedy, fashion and music, ahead of the Chinese New Year on Thursday Eric Liu, 22, of organisers the Oxford Chinese Students and Scholars Association, said: “Normally we do not go out on the day, we spend that time with our families, so all the celebration happens before that.

“We are all students far away from home so we try to create the feeling of home.

“But we also but also want to promote our culture to the local community.”

Meng Pan, 22, said: “We chose to play music that has Chinese character.

“Because we are in a foreign country for our studies we wanted to get the students together and have a big festival. It is the most important festival for the Chinese.”

This year will be the year of the rabbit.

Mr Liu, who also played the hu, added: “The year of the rabbit is a good year – quite a prosperous year. As well as being a cute animal the rabbit symbolises good fortune.”
