PRIMARY schoolchildren got the chance to wield a conductor’s baton as they took the helm at an Oxfordshire Youth Orchestra performance.
Little Harry Beel, pictured, from Windmill Primary School, Headington, was one of the youngsters picked out as a budding Bernstein at the Sheldonian Theatre on Thursday.
The eight-year-old said: “It was a bit scary at first, but I soon got the hang of it. The concert was quite amazing, and I would like to play in an orchestra one day.
“I play the recorder and piano at the moment, but now I want to learn the trumpet.”
Pupils from 28 Oxfordshire primary schools heard the County Music Service’s orchestra play music by Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky and Borodin.
The event on Thursday saw many of them attending a classical concert for the first time.
