Mr Willcox (Oxford Mail, January 26) expresses concern that the health of city residents will be affected by the proposed closure of the Temple Cowley Pools and gym.

I would like to point out that the city council will not be closing that facility until a new modern pool is constructed adjacent to the Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, providing both swimming and fitness facilities as well as sports hall options for other fitness activities.

The alternative proposal, involving the refurbishment of the existing Temple Cowley pool would involve a closure period of up to two years, during which time there would be no pool available in the south east part of the city, which would have a far greater impact on people seeking to remain fit and healthy.

I should add that the city council provides a very wide range of activities that support healthy lifestyles – from dance to athletics – at the Barton, Blackbird Leys and Marston Ferry leisure centres, the Horspath running track, and at community centres and playgrounds.

The council works closely with the primary care trust to encourage healthy eating and lifestyles, and Oxford has one of the best adult participation rates in the south east of England in active sport.
