PRIORY Lane was closed to traffic for the town’s first rural street fair in 1974. Craftsmen and women from the Cotswolds set up stalls and gave demonstrations in wood lathing, pottery, spinning and lacemaking. The fair was organised by Burford members of the Cancer Research Campaign.

Members of Burford Cottage Hospital comforts fund committee are seen in the second picture in 1973 with a hand-sewn patchwork quilt they had been working on for two years. The quilt was later raffled at a coffee morning. Those pictured are, back, Sybil Adams and Joan Milner, and front, Doris Lloyd, Kathleen Hussey, Joan Smith and Iris Richardson.

The third picture, taken at the hospital’s autumn fair in 1970, shows Karoline Curtis, nine, Helen Donnelly, nine, Jessica Leaf, eight, and Josephine Cook, 10, at the lucky dip.
