Sir – I was very interested to read A long time in the making in Weekend (January 20) — it looks a fascinating project.
However, (you knew that was coming didn’t you) William Buckland did not ‘end his days at Stonesfield’ — although he did discover the famous fossil bones of Megalosaurus there.
In 1845 he accepted the position of Dean of Westminster, which brought with it the rectorship of Islip.
He and his family lived in the old rectory here — as is attested by the blue plaque on the gatepost — until his death in 1856. His grave may be seen in Islip churchyard.
There have been several articles on William Buckland in back numbers of The Oxford Times and Limited Edition. I look forward to seeing and hearing more of Giants in the Earth.
Brian Nash, Islip
