THE headteacher at the new Oxford Spires Academy said the school has got off to a “dream start” this term.

The academy had its official launch yesterday after opening to pupils on the site of Oxford Community School earlier this month.

Principal Sue Croft said: “The past two weeks have been a dream start.

“The students and staff have absolutely bought into the changes and the behaviour has been excellent.

“That was always the hope, and the change has been even greater than I imagined.”

Deputy head girl Joanitta Akpai, 17, said: “There has been a very big difference in behaviour and attendance.

“It is great because there is a real buzz around the school now.”

The school was officially opened by former Ofsted inspector Sir Jim Rose and Oxford sporting legend Sir Roger Bannister.

The first sub-four-minute-miler said: “It all looks amazing, and of course one would like the other schools in Oxford to have these kind of opportunities.

“I wish it well and I am sure it will be a very successful school.”
