ONE of the most popular events at the George Inn in Botley Road, Oxford, was the annual sausage eating contest.

The winner of the 1981 event was 20-year-old David Blackwell, who outchewed nine other competitors to win the title for the second year.

He was disappointed, however, that he didn’t improve on his previous score.

In the 10 minutes allowed, he ate 18 sausages – the same number he managed to eat in 1980.
