The news that Oxfordshire residents have given up £17,000 worth of winter fuel payments given them by the Government is a warming tale.

You could be forgiven in thinking homeowners would be reluctant to give away free money, particularly given the harsh winter and the volatile economy.

But our more well off OAPs have admirably given up payments of between £125 and £400.

It would be interesting to see if other ‘universal benefits’ could be surrendered – and what the Government would spend the money on if it got the money back.
