DRIVERS faced treacherous roads across Oxfordshire when black ice formed following a heavy frost today.

Freezing temperatures overnight led to icy conditions, with 95 per cent of all police call-outs involving road accidents.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to seven accidents in just two hours along the A40 between Headington and the M40 junction near Wheatley and between junctions eight and six on the motorway. Tonight police advised motorists to delay their journeys until roads had been regritted.

Motorist Ross Ditchburn, said he saw three crashes between Wantage and Witney this morning.

He said: “It was treacherous out there and there were sheens of ice so it didn’t look like the roads had been gritted.”

Thames Valley Police spokesman Laura Deane said some were driving too fast for the conditions.

She said: “Officers were very busy this morning. Across the force, we were called 66 road traffic collisions which resulted in injuries.”

South Central Ambulance service said there were more than 30 accidents between 6.45am and 10.30am in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

No-one from Oxfordshire County Council – responsible for gritting most of the county’s roads – was available to say how much gritting had been done.
