IF you haven’t already, you must visit Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.
It’s on a par with Amsterdam. I had the good fortune to live in Copenhagen for a few years and I soaked up the bike culture until the day I left.
To be one of thousands, to have rights, to be treated with respect and to have cycle paths everywhere is totally liberating – and a great equaliser.
I now ride around Chinnor and its environs on a seven-speed Grandma-style Dutch Batavus bike, complete with foot brake, immobiliser, light-sensitive dynamo, basket and stand.
It’s my bike fashion statement. Some may consider it eccentric, but I know there’s a place on this planet where my bike is ordinary and I'm just a speck in a stream of cyclists.
That’s what keeps me going!
